The Last Kiss Goodbye A Novel Dr Charlotte Stone Karen Robards Books
*I always have spoilers.* Ms. Robards has come through with a great sequel. Dr. Charlotte Stone and Michael Garland (deceased) are crime solving again. The story picks up just a few days after The Last Victim. Michael was a convicted serial killer that Dr. Stone was studying. He was killed while in prison right in front of Dr. Stone. Just a little background. Other reviewers have given a great synopsis of the storyline so I'll not go into that further because it might spoil the story for other readers. If you haven't read The Last Victim, I recommend you do. I think you will like it. But this book can stand alone.Ms. Robards chose the storyline as a serious investigation of a serial killer with Dr. Stone (Charlie) and Michael acting like a cross between The Thin Man and Topper, movies of the 1930s. And it works! The investigation into the serial killer was serious with Charlie trying to help the FBI connect the dots to find the killer before more young people are killed. She is hindered by the ghost of Michael following her around giving his comments on everything from her personal life to ideas about the killer, sometime being snarky and angry and other times being helpful and protective. He's crazy about Charlie, but due to his being a ghost, can do little about it. Michael talks to Charlie, she can't talk to him when anyone else is around because no one else can see or hear him. It makes for some comical circumstances. The dialogue between Charlie and Michael was fast and good. They were in sync. The surrounding characters were an asset to the story and the hunt for the killer was thrilling, especially the last chapter. The book may have been a little long, but I didn't knock any points off because the ending was so wonderful! I hope Ms. Robards continues and makes this a series. If you like mystery/thrillers with a love story involved, this one's for you.
Good reading all.

The Last Kiss Goodbye A Novel Dr Charlotte Stone Karen Robards Books Reviews
I was rather disappointed with this book. I am a Karen Robards fan – and have read the first book in this series (The Last Victim) – and really liked it. Unlike the first book, this one just didn’t “grab” me. I think my problem was that the main character (Dr. Charlotte Stone) wasn’t personally threatened by the serial killer her team was trying to catch. It seemed to me that most of this book was dedicated to the relationship between Charlotte and her ghost-lover, Michael – a dead serial killer (explained in the first book). I read this book hoping for a suspenseful thriller – and it turned out to be more of a romance (with a little suspense). As I said, this is the second book in the series about Dr. Stone, a psychiatrist whose specializes in trying to find out what makes serial killers “tick.” I think to get the most from it – you really need to have read the first book (which is more of a thriller – with a little romance thrown in). I do like Ms. Robards’ books – and I will read the third in the series. I just hope it has more suspense in it!
Great second book! Although I'm getting impatient, I don't see how we can have an HEA between Charlie and her ghost boyfriend, Michael. Both characters are getting along much better, notwithstanding their sexual frustration. Charlie still has some misgivings about whether Michael is or isn't a serial killer, but her heart tells her he is innocent. I was convinced since the first book and am rooting for them. Ms. Robards is in a pickle here to achieve an HEA, unless she plans to continue this series a long time.
Charlie and Michael are in Charlie's house, right after the case in the first book was solved, and Michael started to disappear. Charlie called a psychic friend and and right did some juju on Michael to keep him on the living world. Right after this, a young woman, scared out of her wits, and all bloody, appears frantically knocking on the kitchen door, screaming that a man is following her and will kill her. Right away, they are involved in another serial killer case. All the time, Michael is bitching to Charlie to get out of the case to be safe and Charlie stubbornly refuses. There was one passage where she admits to him that she is always afraid but she needs to help victims against serial killers because, that is what gives her life purpose. If Michael hasn't fallen in love with her yet, I'm pretty sure he did then.
Charlie is afraid of her developing feelings for Michael because she's sure it will never work out, so she wants to give a relationship with FBI agent Toni Bartoli a try. The problem is, Michael is not cooperating and playing pranks. They continue bickering during this book, and it was sometimes entertaining, other times it got old for me. Charlie was almost all the time ascerbic with Michael, and he seems to like it, or could be he's stuck with her if he wants to stay away from Spooksville.
The investigative part of the book was more complicated than the first book, and more interesting. Secondary characters were as wll developed as the first book. Great reading!
With the first book in the Charlotte Stone series The Last Victim, I had to read it twice to digest the story and plotline and decide whether or not I liked it. Because I was completely flabbergasted and couldn't wrap my head around my thoughts and feelings towards to book. I have read quite a few Karen Robards books, and though she has pushed the limits of my romantic-suspense preferences before, this was unlike anything of hers, or any authors', that I had read before.
It went in a completely different direction to where I thought the story would go (astral-projection? sex with a ghost, hello!)
Reading it a second time, I decided that I liked the book and wanted to know what would happen with Charlotte, her sexy ghost and their where-is-this-going-to-go affair, and her alive-and-kicking-human love interest.
Hence I read book 2 of the series The Last Kiss Goodbye. And because I refused to let myself make assumptions on what would happen with the characters or the storyline, I enjoyed it.
During the climax of the storyline, I was on the edge of my seat. And now I look forward to purchasing and reading book 3 and 4 of the series
