Prisoner of Time Caroline B Cooney Books Reviews
"A Prisoner of Time" was much-much better than "For All Time" and surpassed "Both Sides Of Time," as well. This book had none stop action and was interesting. Todd could have been better developed, but that is my only complaint. I think Hiram Stratton, Sr., was shown to be a heartless human being better in this book than in the other two "Time" novels combined. I hope in the last book in this quad series, it will show why both Annie AND Todd were able to time travel - is it hereditary or just pure luck? I guess only *time* will tell...... I recommend.
Ok this book was alright.... I thought the point of this book was Devonny & Tod, and their romance. But then, it spent a lot of the time, focusing back on Devonny's time. This bored me greatly!!!
I also didn't know what to make of Lord Windon, Devonny's fiance. In the book it was stressed that he was evil, but then towards the end it was showing a gentler side of him, so I was kind of stunned. I do admit, I wish Annie and Strat were more in this though!
Also, I thought Devonny and Tod would have more of a romance. It was kind of like Tod fell in love with her, and Devonny fell in love with him. But there wasn't any words or emotions to back their statements up!! And when Devonny left, it seemed like Tod showed no emotion. I wish it was better, and I can't wait to get my romance-lovin paws on the final one!!!!!!
ISBN 044022019x - This book is a little on the romance-y side for some, my teenaged self included. Fortunately, I'm no longer a teenager and found it entertaining.
Devonny's father is a wealthy man - and that might be the most positive thing that could be said about him. In 1898, men make the rules and the decisions and women follow, and Hiram Stratton has decided that his 16 year old daughter will marry Lord Winden before the world knows the family's shameful secret Devonny's missing and presumed dead brother was insane. Insanity likely flows in Devonny's blood, so getting her married off is of some importance. Giving her father a titled grandchild, however, is of more importance.
Devonny, on the other hand, knows the type of man she'd like to marry - and Lord Winden is NOT that type of man. In fact, she tells him what she thinks he is horse manure. Then she is forced to apologize when her father orders her to accept his proposal. She is in desperate need of rescuing...
Tod Lockwood, boy of the twentieth century, has no interest in rescuing anyone. First of all, his mother - a strong, capable woman - would be appalled at the thought of a female who needed rescuing. More than that, Tod has decided to get rich first, and fall in love later. If only Time weren't intent on mucking up his plans. While filling bottles at a public pump at Stratton Point, which Tod markets to tourists as "designer water", Tod is flung back in Time and brought face to face with Devonny, who begs him to save her.
The story itself is nice, if not fantastic. The greatest problem is that Cooney didn't make much of an effort at telling a stand-alone tale. Readers like myself who haven't read Both Sides of Time (Scholastic Classics) and Out of Time will find the vague and incomplete references to the happenings in those books annoying. One paragraph was all it would have taken to bring latecomers to the series into the loop, but Cooney failed to do that. The closest she comes is a recap that starts on page 167, by which time, my annoyance was pretty intense - too little, too late. I found it worth reading, but suggest others might find it better to read the series in order, or not at all.

I had read the first two books in this series and was excited when I saw that Devonny and Tod would meet (from reading the back cover). Unfortunately, Annie was away on an exchange program and Strat had changed his name and headed to Egypt without contacting Devonny.
Devonny came to the modern era after Tod rescued her from an unromantic marriage to a stuffy English lord who only wants her money. She's pretending to be an English exchange student who needs to stay with Tod's family for a little after problems with her host family while the two ask Annie about Strat, who could stop the marriage. That, as I already said, is impossible because Annie doesn't know where Strat is. So the two must work together to figure out why Devonny's father arranged the marriage so quickly and stop him from being a typical overbearing Victorian Era father. Of course there's a bit of a crush between Dev and Tod, but nothing quite like Strat and Annie's relationship. Devonny does find a happy ending that is much more enjoyable than Strat and Annie's separation of a hundred years.
Major character disappointment aside, as I tried to remember what happened in the book to write the review (about a week or so later), I forgot what happened after Devonny staying with Tod and thought that very little therefore happened. Opening the book up to random pages at the end of the book and reading little snippets did help.
Devonny is supposed to be a little more outgoing than the average Victorian woman, but it always seems to me that only in the second half of Prisoner does she not look for somebody else to help her and finally take a stand for herself. In the second book, she relied on Annie to come and save Strat. Here, she wants Strat to save her from the wedding. Tod is actually the one to do so.
The main thing that I get from Tod's personality is that he doesn't like responsibility. He was coerced into being the coach for a girl's soccer team. He doesn't want to believe that he's in 1898, and thinks that it's some sort of dream from drinking strange water. He's not very understanding of Devonny and her situation at first, either, and wasn't very accomodationg.
Props for the Flossie-Gianni elopement subplot.
I didn't enjoy the ending very much. First, the whole avoiding-the-marriage idea didn't fully stand up to murder or breaking out of an insane asylum, and problems with engagement already occured in Both Sides of Time. The ending confrontation wasn't as intense as in the other books. Devonny's love interest (if you can call it that) at the end was somewhat typical and very annoying. I hate to give anything away, but she changed her mind in a complete other direction than what she thought. The women's rights/standing up for themselves was a major idea, and bound to be more than touched upon (as it has in the past two books), but it was almost expected.
Love these books they are a great series to read. The characters are lovable and you really want to see them get what they want.
If you love time travel, this is a great choice, one of the original good stories!
