Katherine Center has an absolute gift for writing wonderful characters that you can’t step away from. Our heroine Sarah is not perfect but she’s very real and you want to see where she is going. This book is really about her and not the big thing she’s doing in her life which is pretty obvious from the blurb. We get to come along while she figures it out and enjoy every minute of it. I’m really enjoying that Katherine Center writes these books that are so much about enjoying the journey with her characters and not racing to the end. I’m not in a hurry to find out what’s going to happen next but very happily enjoying the ride. I wasn’t sure about this book from the description but I’m very happy I took a chance on it.Tags : Get Lucky: A Novel [Katherine Center] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Hard to put down. Loved the tale of motherless sisters bond carried through life. Dixie is great character and good for everyone. Families come in many forms and sometimes we just learn to play the hand we were dealt.
Sarah learning to grow. trust and survive all after coming back home was good turn and while having the babies was complicated..it was the exact right thing to do.
Enjoyed the book
I have enjoyed several of Katherine Center's novels. I always find them engaging and get through them in a few days. This is probably my second or third favorite of all her books. I did find it an engaging story line, if a bit predictable. Great if you're looking for a beach read or otherwise relatively light read.
Mackie was my favorite character....on second thought, Dixie was my favorite. Oh my, I really liked getting to know Clive, Howard and April. All the characters are wonderful. I always put a Katherine Center book down with a smile!
Sarah Harper has crashed and burned at her job and has run home to Houston and her sister to get back into the air. She and her sister have always been close and, when she discovers her sister has given up trying to have a baby, decides to serve as a surrogate mother for her. She ends up carrying twins, but the surrogate motherhood is really just a small part of the story. Sarah meets up with a former boyfriend who she cruelly dumped in high school and tries to reconnect with him and make amends...she works on her relationship with her sister...and she tries to figure out her place in the world. All of these plot lines come together to make a satisfying story.
I like Katherine Center. But then again I know Houston and that makes a book like this one, set in Houston, a more interesting read.
This as a fun read, and the characters and situations easy to imagine. It did seem as though a lot of the typical issues around a pregnancy, especially with twins, were absent, however, with the character breezing through those months nearly effortlessly. Overall, a great read.
Loved this book so much that I bought everything she has written. Just finished "Happiness for Beginners" - couldn't but it down. I love Katherine Center -check out her web page - she is amazing & inspirational & so very cool & real!
A story about sisters Sarah and Mackie Harper, Get Lucky A Novel reveals the differences and the similarities that bind the two, even when they're living totally separate lives--with Sarah in New York and Mackie back home in Houston, Texas, with husband Clive.
Then one day, in the midst of an advertising campaign that would, most likely, move Sarah up the ladder of success, she does something so daring (and inappropriate) that she ends up jobless and on a flight home to Texas.
As if to add to her humiliation, Sarah is shoved up into a small seat on the plane next to the guy she dumped in high school...Everett Thompson. And from his attitude, he hasn't forgotten or forgiven.
Holed up in Mackie's gorgeous home, she thinks about cocooning there for awhile. And then, hearing about Mackie's unsuccessful attempts to carry a child, she offers up her "womb." Outrageous as this sounds, the two find themselves immersed in the fantasy of it. They also check out the realities and find it is possible. Surprisingly, husband Clive is on board. The baby would be created with Clive's sperm and Mackie's egg--Sarah would just be the gestational carrier.
Just as she launches this project for her sister, Sarah discovers that Everett works for Clive, and obviously, she'll be seeing a lot of him over the next few months.
I enjoyed this story so much that I was laughing all the way through, except for the parts that reminded me of feelings of rejection and envy and loss. Those feelings connected me to the characters so deeply that I wanted to learn more about them--even after the last page.
What these characters brought to my life was how real they felt, and how, despite the somewhat unusual circumstances of the story, they could have been people I knew.
This tale, like every other Katherine Center novel I've read, earned five big stars from me.
