Audio-book: Narrator - Ashford McNabLove the life and passion this narrator brings to these characters. Such an enjoyable audio to listen to. Each voice very distinctive.
My heart has hurt for Phoebe since I first met her and realized her plight. So I was particularly invested in her story and who this author would pair her with. Wow! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better couple. The fact that James was so kind and considerate to her and yet knew she needed her freedom was sometimes so beautiful to listen to that it was blinding. He was simply a man in love with a woman that by all rights and appearances should have never even considered him. But she does and it was so spectacularly sweet to watch her awaken under his guidance even as part of that awakening was standing tall and firm in her own right.
Definitely one of the better stories of the series...and yes! She was a maiden! Lol!

Dearest Rogue Maiden Lane Elizabeth Hoyt 9781455586356 Books Reviews
The first 150 pages of this book were a struggle. I have read only one other book in the Maiden Lane series - Darling Beast. It was a page-turner. Dearest Rogue struck me as preposterous in its plot. The characters weren't finely drawn. Yet, I persevered. I am thankful that I did. Once James Trevillion kidnapped Lady Phoebe Batten to keep her safe in Cornwell, this became a wonderful, interesting story with characters that lived and breathed in my imagination. I loved the interaction between Trevillion and Lady Phoebe. Trevillion's family and the reasons for his estrangement from them were fully realized and intriguing. The wild moors and the sea coast were characters in themselves.
Elizabeth Hoyt is one of my go-to Regency Romance writers. I preorder all of her books and when one arrives on my reader, I usually spend the day trying to hold off a while to read it so I can savor it or pounce on it immediately because I just can't wait.
It feels like I was waiting a long time for Phoebe's story in the Maiden Lane books and I was not disappointed to finally read it. Despite her blindness, Phoebe is feisty and determined to live her life. And James, well he's my perfect hero. A little stuffy, knowing that Phoebe far outranks him but with an unrequited love for her that he tries to suppress. He puts Phoebe's life and happiness above everything else - how can you not love that as a romance reader?
It's a great book and now I have to wait again for her next one, sigh....
Loved it! A great romance for those who aren't usually into romance. If you can only get one of Elizabeth Hoyt's books, I recommend Dearest Rogue about blind Lady Phoebe and her bodyguard, Captain James Trevillion. If you prefer contemporary, this could be your gateway into period romances. I tend to read fantasy or contemporary action, but this book hooked me from the start. Everything felt wholly unique; Hoyt smashes and runs over the boundaries of every possible trope and cliché. Romance! Action! Dastardly kidnapping plots! Happily Ever After, even if your brother is an overbearing Duke and your love not a noble.
I got this book after reading the review on the "Smart B*tches, Trashy Books" blog and am so glad I did! This is the first book I've read by this author and it definitely won't be my last. I loved the writing and Phoebe and James were wonderful together. I liked the fact that James wasn't a duke and I identified with him because he was lame. And Phoebe was so determined to live her life despite the fact that she was blind. I liked her brother and their relationship, but I loved her even more when she stood up to him. I liked James's grandfather, Agnes and Dolly. The dialogue between James and Phoebe was so beautifully written, too. I'm looking forward to reading other books in this series!
Wait a minute! A body guard and a body guardee fall in love. Hasn't that been done quite a bit?
Not the way that scenario is handled in this book, in classic Hoyt style.
The heroine is blind, but that isn't a cause for piles of pathos to be heaped on the reader's head. Phoebe is devoid of self-pity and determined to experience life--and love. The hero is devoted to duty and to Phoebe. James is rather surprised to find himself in love and keenly feels the disparity in their ages and social standing, but he doesn't dither the entire book until readers want to shake some sense into him.
The story is upbeat and charming. Villains are punished. The requisite dog is endearing, but acts like a real dog. The children are not 30-year-olds in children's clothing, but act like real children.
All-in-all, a very good read.
And the secondary characters! This is book 8 of the Maiden Lane series. Can anyone even remember Maiden
Lane? There are enough intriguing characters in this book to keep the franchise going for years. Eve Dinwiddy comes next, along with "Mr. Harte." But Alf will surely deserve a book when she is old enough, as will the Duke of Montgomery's mysterious housekeeper. Powers, Phoebe's treacherous maid, needs to explain herself--maybe in the 12th book--and lady Lady Herrick, a vicious gossip, needs her comeuppance--maybe around book 15.
This was a great book! I'm a fan of Elizabeth Hoyt's works. This was the second book I read from her and I can say that I am very pleased with it!! It had romance, suspense, mystery, comedy and, as you continued reading, you were not able to put it down.
I love that these books are not exactly serialized. So you can read #9 before #7. There are, of course, little details that are given in the previous book that would benefit you reading them in order, but they're not too great as to impede you from understanding the book.
I also liked that she really got a hang for that time period. The words and expressions they use, makes you think that you are submerged in that time period as well. Also the problems that arise in the book are well handled and believable.
I totally recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a good story that has various elements included. So... what are you waiting for? Go read this book! D
