Bobby Sky Boy Band or Die Joe Shine Books Reviews

This was a quick, can't-put-it-down read. The main character is the right balance of snarky and likable. I hadn't read the first book set in the same universe, but am interested in reading it, although this book stands on its own.
This was super-cute. I really liked Hutch, the main character, who just can't help himself and bursts into song at the most inopportune times. Of course, this gets him in trouble and left with a choice to become a kind of secret agent man or head off to DJJ. The answer is easy. Secret agents are always the way to go. Fast-paced, light and fun tone, great characters make for a fast read.
After reading Book 1 about Ren and the Shadow world, my husband & I immediately wanted to read Book 2. We were not disappointed! It was even better than Book One! Joe Shine's writing style is very unique and fun to read! I totally fell in love with Hutch (Bobby), even more than Ren... but "spoiler alert", we're looking forward to Book 3 where I think they will be working together against the forces of evil!!! Thank you Joe for your wonderful creativity!!
This is a humorous book about a teen who must become part of a boy band. Hutch has gotten into trouble one too many times. While in detention, he gets a visit from someone who gives him the chance to give up his old life and train to be a body guard. He will protect a Future Important Person. This FIP will be the face of a popular boy band and Hutch (renamed Bobby Sky) has to be part of the band to keep him safe.

I found this story to be entertaining and quick to read. At times, I was snickering out loud. The main characters were likeable and fairly relatable. I think this would be a good story for upper elementary or middle school readers. My kids read it and said they liked it. We're glad to have it in our home library.
My 12 year old 7th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review
--- "Hutch is the local trouble-maker. Having another brush with the law, he runs, but gets caught and is sentenced to 9 months in juvenile detention. Sometime into his sentence, a lady comes to visit. He's taken to a private meeting room and told that he will die the next day. Though Hutch is skeptical at first, the lady explains that she is with F.A.T.E., a company that created a satellite that can see into the future, and he can go to work for them instead of being in prison. He accepts, and is whisked away -- instantly drugged to sleep. When he wakes up a month later, it is time to start training. He passes through everything and graduates two years early, and is ready to become a Shadow. But to get access to his F.I.P. (Future Important Person) he has to become -- a teen pop sensation! It's Boy Band or Die, and he must protect Ryo, his F.I.P., at all costs. Keeping him out of danger from everyone, including F.A.T.E. Does Hutch (er, "Bobby Sky") have what it takes to survive, and keep Ryo alive? Find out in this amazing book! If you haven't read Joe Shine's first book, I Become Shadow, I highly recommend reading it first, but it isn't exactly necessary. Bobby Sky Boyband or Die... was a real page-turner, it kept me up reading, I didn't want to put it down! It is full of suspenseful humor and laugh-out-loud humor, Hutch's point of view is really great. He was my favorite character by far, with his trickster, flirty, "bad boy" personality. All the characters are great though! I can't wait for another book set in this "world"! It is definitely one of my favorites, right up there with the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series. I recommend it to everyone, ages 12+!"

-- My daughter loved this book so much that she told me I "HAD" to read it. She finished it in a 36 hour period, and I think I did about the same. The writing is quick and witty, with conversational Hutch being a very relatable, likeable character despite his crazy circumstances. I actually read this book, first, before reading I Become Shadow -- I think they are pretty interchangeable, but there are fun references if you read them chronologically. We are eagerly anticipating more from this author!
Fourteen-year-old Robert "Hutch" Hutchinson is no stranger to encountering hostile law enforcement, in fact when the novel begins, he's busy taunting two officers from the other side of his home door by suggesting they sing a Christmas carol with him. As he escapes out a window, Hutch informs the reader that he's been in trouble frequently, following the footsteps of his father who was arrested for drug possession, to the despair of his mother and even some of the authorities who tell him that he's a smart guy. Once in detention, however, he's offered (if that's the word) a shot at a drastically new life - after being informed that his death is imminent, and there's only one way to avoid it. When Hutch "agrees", he's whisked away to a top secret training program (under the radar of the official government) that will transform him into a killing/spying machine, then assign him a "Future Important Person" to shadow. Sure enough, when Hutch graduates, he's given the assignment of "Bobby Sky," the designated bad boy of a boy band, shadowing the star, Ryo. While Hutch finds the performing part of his job relatively easy, the protection part eventually takes a drastic turn. Soon Hutch and the other band members are facing not just hysterical fans and "crises" arranged by their manager, but genuine threats to their lives. When Hutch is faced with the choice of betraying those he cares about or saving the lives of strangers in peril, he must face a task in which suffering and loss will result either way - not exactly the stuff of his superhero spy fantasies, but one that must be made nevertheless.

Thoughts Hutch is a likeable protagonist with whom it's easy to become invested in his bizarre journey. However, many of the other characters receive little characterization, perhaps because of their environment and mission but making it hard for the reader to care about them all the same. Still, there is plenty of originality and humor in this second of the author's series. It's also not necessary to read the prequel to grasp all the intricacies of this book, everything is well explained.
