House of Dark Shadows Dreamhouse Kings Series Book 1 Robert Liparulo Books
House of Dark Shadows is book one in the Dreamhouse Kings series. It is a young adult series, but I really love it. I think anyone would really enjoy it. Another older book, but well worth reading. Robert Liparulo is an excellent author. This book is about the Kings family. Three children-young adults and their parents. They find out very soon that there house is very strange. You hear sounds where people are not and they go from one place to another very fast.
Then the two older boys find a hidden hallway that have portals that lead to far off places in a time long ago.
Many scary things happen and each of the boys go into a portal and almost don’t make it out alive, but that isn’t the worse that happens there.
The only part I didn’t like about this novel is the ending. Quite a cliff hanger and I’ve heard other people say this is book one in a six series book. So I need to read them all to find out what happens and how the family makes it out if they do at all.
Highly recommended book. Loved it and wish I could read them all.
I own this book and was not required to review it.

House of Dark Shadows Dreamhouse Kings Series Book 1 Robert Liparulo Books Reviews
As already stated, this book doesn't really end, but leaves you with a quest for the next adventure. I am 51, and found this book as intriguing as any King or Koontz Novel. However, the plot had a few down moments (a little slow), then picked up the pace. Despite some of the tags, this is NOT Christian Fiction. There is an excerpt from the end for the next book - Chapter 1 - But I'm wondering if I prefer the First Book to the Second. I will definitely be following this series though.
The Kings move into a house, but there is more to the story. There is the propensity of using Mom and Dad instead of real names - so we take it that the story is written from Xander's perspective. This does not detract from Adult interest. I was able to deduce from the beginning Dad's involvement (made appropriate highlights to follow my thinking), but was quite surprised at the root. That was very enjoyable. The Sibling bonding was a little deep for modern times (or, at least in my family experience). But is necessary for story development, since the main characters are rather limited in number (at least, in this first book)
Plot 4.5 stars

The Character Development was a little shallow. The book played out more akin to a movie. We get a few glimpses at Mom's background - however, no spoiler, Mom's development is the most shallow. Probably trying to attract the attention span of a younger audience, the development of the plot superseded full character development. That's not to say there IS NO Character development - just that a little more fleshing out would be nice. More detail was provided to scene development than the actual characters themselves. If you weren't careful - you could mix up background characters, and miss important history of main plot characters (emphasis, of course, was on Xander).
Character Development 3.5

Writing Style wavered a bit. Descriptions of scenes were above par, but similes and grammar were wanting - the grammar fluctuated with the rush of a story line. The errors are not pervasive, but can distract from a smooth read in some spots. This is the only thing that separates the fledgling from the King and Koontz.
Style 3.5

I received the tpz format of this book. There are problems with page turns and font, placement of words. I don't know the format of the priced book, I received a free copy. I only mention this in order to help the Author with his Editions. Highlighting was not smooth across what I perceive to be OCR errors, and turning a page back - you jumped several pages back (going forward was not a problem). This was at 2 higher levels of text than the default - since I need that for my eyes to read.

Overall, I will buy the next Watcher in the Woods (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 2) when I replenish my monthly book allowance. This alone raises the star level, and overcomes some of the criticism in this review. I state an overall 4 star review, recommended for ALL audiences.
PS, SPOILER
I will enjoy the included Reader Study Guide.
When 15 year old Xander, 12 year old David and 9 year old Toria are moved to Pinedale from California, they are not thrilled. Their Dad has taken a job as principal in the school in the small town and it is a move up for him. They drive around looking for homes and find one in the woods away from everywhere. It is quite large and Dad thinks it will be great for all of them. Xander and David are having second thoughts about the house. It has strange noises and voices appear to be coming from a different area than where the actual person is.
While searching every square inch of the house, the boys find a closet that appears to be a portal. It transports the boys from the closet to the school in 5 seconds. After following an intruder, they find a staircase that leads to a long hallway with doors. Each door leads to an antechamber with different articles of clothing or tools in each.
Liparulo leads you on a trip that is thrilling and scary, making your imagination work double time. The pages fly because you can't wait to see how it will turn out. I can't wait to read the sequel.
First off, I am a 7th grade Language Arts teacher, and read all six books in this series several years ago. As an adult reader, I loved them all. I bought this first volume again for one simple reason to read the prologue to every class I teach. This is the answer to any kid's question, "What books do you recommend for me to read?" This is storytelling at its finest. Great characters, beyond-extra-ordinary situations, and a lot of heart. I will be more than ecstatic if/when Mr. Liparulo chooses to give us an encore with this awesome family and their incredible house.
